Breastfeeding and Returning to Work

Dear Lisbeth

As Asger is almost nine months old, I do not find it necessary for him to take formula from a bottle ... it is not worth the struggle, if you succeed you will have to wean him off the bottle after just three months when Asger is twelve months old ...

A nine months old baby can also have more cow's milk, i.e. you can offer him milk from a cup, some natural yoghurt or similar, which he may enjoy.

I recommend that you express milk for a while, this way he can have some extra mother's milk during the day, and that daddy uses formula in the cereal and the purée. I also suggest that you try to breastfeed as much as possible.

I guess you will try to avoid to bring the breastfeeding to a complete stop, and you will just have to see what happens. Some women succeed in maintaining the milk production for a long time offering one breast feed a day for several years ...

In general, an eight months old baby needs 3 breast feeds a day, at the age of approx. ten months reduce to two breast feeds a day. Time will show how many breast feeds you will be able to offer Asger. Perhaps daddy will be able to offer Asger a bottle of formula, when mummy is not at home ...

I hope this is helpful, and as you can deduct, there is no reason why Asger's milk intake cannot be covered one way or the other:o)

I wish you the best of luck.

Kind regards,

Helen Hansen
