Dear Lotte

Generally you should not use a lot of creams and ointments for your baby's skin. The baby skin is so fine and there is no reason that you use a lot of unnecessary substances. The nappies will often keep your baby's bottom dry, they have a good absorbency and is it not like in the old days when nappies became very wet:o)

Zink ointment or zink cream is generally used for red bottoms and irritated skin. The cream protects the skin, and provides a little layer that keeps out the uric and stools acid and at the same time induces a little fat and care. In Denmark it is recommended to apply a thin layer of cream on the dry and clean skin when the skin as already mentioned is red and irritated, and you can do so at each nappy change until the skin is healthy and has recovered its natural colour.

Should the baby have a very red bottom and should the zink treatment not have any effect, the baby might suffer from a fungus infection, and treatment is very important, where a specific prescription cream/ointment is required.

When choosing creams and ointments for your baby it is of the utmost importance to be very careful-a lot of products contain deleterious substances such as hormone disturbing substances and might also cause allergic reactions. Always read the product instruction carefully. Choose a perfume-free product without parabenes (preservatives). On the website www.babykemi.dk you will find a list of substances that might cause allergic reactions.

In Denmark you can buy several products without these substances. E.g. buy your creams and ointments in the pharmacy.

I hope you find my advice useful, and I wish you the best of luck:o)

Kind regards,

Helen Hansen
