Dear Grandmother

Camomile is certainly not harmful to little babies. The thing is that camomile tea as well as boiled water do not contain any nutrients, and there is always a risk that the milk intake might be to low should the baby also drink camomile tea. A low milk intake does affect the development and the general well-being of the baby.

The stomach of a newborn baby holds approx. 7 ml during the first days, and the baby should therefore be offered the important and nourishing colostrum. As the milk production increases and the baby eats more and more, the stomach also holds a larger quantity of milk, however the baby needs a lot of milk in order to cover his milk intake, i.e. 1/6 of the baby's body weight a day. In other words, if a baby weighs 3600 g, he will need approx. 600 ml of milk a day divided in 6-8 feeds. Should you then offer the baby 1 x 100 ml of camomile tea or 4 x 25 ml of camomile tea, the tea will occupy the space in the stomach not leaving enough space for the nourishing milk ...

Should your grandchild not gain enough weight, this is probably why your daughter-in-law has been told not to give him camomile tea. It is perhaps necessary for your daughter-in-law to increase her milk production by breastfeeding more frequently. The more bottle feed, camomile tea, formula milk etc. the lower production of mother's milk.

I hope you find my reply useful:o)
