Refuses to drink the formula
Hi Helen

My 18 weeks old Oliver refuses to drink his formula ... 4 days ago he started on rice cereal, however he does not eat much.

He eats between 80ml and 200ml at each feed, sometimes with an interval of up to 5 hours ... it that ok?

It takes about an hour to feed him, he often cries.

Weight at birht: 2990 g, actual weight 6700 g, length 63 cm

I would really appreciate your advice ...

Hello

First of all I recommend that you follow the daily routine:

Early morning 06.00am: bottle feed, let him eat while sleeping, if posible

Late morning 09.30am: bottle feed and settle him for a nap

Lunch 12.00pm: Try offering him some rice cereal with fruit purée, offer him formula from a cup

Settle him for a nap

Afternoon 03.00pm: Offer him a bottle feed, take advantage of the time where he is just about to wake up, as he will be thirsty and still a little sleepy

06.00pm: Offer him some rice cereal with fruit purée, formula from a cup

Settle him for the night with a bottle feed 07.30-08.00pm

Late evening/night: 11.00pm-01.00am: Bottle feed, let him eat while sleeping

Try not to hold him in your arms while bottle feeding, as he obviously does not seem to like the situation. Try instead to bottle feed him while he lies down beside you, in his pram, on his play mat etc.

Feed him as much as possible while he is more or less at sleep, i.e. late night, early morning etc.

Do not force him to drink from the bottle, try to feed him with a spoon, a cup to see whether he accepts and then go back to the bottle later.

Should he still refuse to drink from the bottle, to drink formula, and if your experience that his nappy is not a weat as ususally and that he should be in lack of fluid, I recommend that you contact your GP and have your son examined.

By following the above daily routine, I am sure that everything works out smoothly for you:o)

Kind regards,

Helen Hansen
